As far as we know, Lawrence Michael Dillon was the first Briton to transition from female to male and undergo phalloplasty.
The hormones enabled her to pass as a man, and take on the name Michael. In 1942 Michael, who suffered from hypoglycaemia, collapsed in the street and was taken to hospital. The staff were rather confused about which ward was appropriate, but no-one talked about it or went to the newspapers. A little while after he collapsed a second time. The doctor who treated him this time, described himself as a plastic surgeon and, being sympathetic to Michael’s needs, offered to remove his breasts. He also introduced him to Sir Harold Gillies in 1946.

Michael Dillon was the world’s first person known to have successfully transitioned both hormonally and surgically from female to male. Born Laura into an aristocratic Dublin family, he was raised mainly by aunts in Folkestone and graduated from Oxford in 1938. During the 1930s Laura’s conviction strengthened that he was a man in a woman’s body. He sought the advice of a psychiatrist whose indiscretion and the ensuing society gossip caused Laura to come to Bristol in about 1939. Laura took the name Michael, and attended the Merchant Venturers’ Technical College, while working in a garage and living as a man. The garage manager insisted that other staff treat him as male to avoid confusion. He served as a fire watcher during the Bristol Blitz.

This week marks Men’s Health Week, a time dedicated to raising awareness of the health issues that disproportionately affect men as well as engaging men in seeking treatment by expanding access and reducing stigma surrounding health. June is also Pride Month, celebrating the lives and achievements of those of us that identify as LGBTQ+ and bringing to the forefront the issues that still prevent individuals from living those lives to their fullest. So, I felt this week presented a good opportunity for an intersectional piece on both men’s health and highlighting the life of a trans pioneer, Michael Dillon.
